Rescue Assist℠ is a digital safety feature that helps emergency responders safely and efficiently
rescue occupants from a vehicle after a crash. Each equipped Mercedes-Benz includes two QR codes placed in
strategic locations. When scanned, these codes open a digital rescue card showing the exact positions of:

  • Airbags and seatbelt tensioners
  • High-voltage cables and batteries
  • Fuel lines and tanks
  • Reinforced steel zones
  • Safe cutting points

This gives rescuers instant knowledge of where—and where not—to cut, pry, or stabilize a vehicle.

Why Rescue Assist℠ Matters

During an accident, first responders work against the clock. The “golden hour”—the first 60 minutes
after a crash—is critical for saving lives. Modern vehicles are built with complex safety systems that can be
dangerous to cut into blindly. Before Rescue Assist℠, rescuers often had to “peek and peel” by removing panels
to check for hidden airbags or electrical lines, slowing them down and increasing risk.

With Rescue Assist℠, they simply scan the QR code and, within seconds, see the vehicle’s safety blueprint on a
phone or tablet. This can reduce rescue time by one to two minutes, lower hazards for emergency crews, and improve
outcomes for crash victims.

How Rescue Assist℠ Works—Step by Step

Step 1: Locate the QR Codes

Mercedes-Benz places two Rescue Assist℠ QR code stickers in every equipped vehicle: one inside the fuel filler door and one on the opposite door pillar (commonly the driver’s side B-pillar). Both areas are easy to access, even if the vehicle is damaged.

Step 2: Scan with a Smartphone or Tablet

Using any smartphone or tablet, first responders scan the code with a standard camera or QR app—no special software required.

Step 3: View the Digital Rescue Card

Instantly, the system displays the vehicle’s structural map, revealing airbag placement, fuel system layout,
battery and high-voltage wiring, and reinforced pillars and cutting zones. This information shows the safest
approach points.

Step 4: Perform the Rescue

With full structural awareness, crews can work faster and safer—stabilizing, cutting, or lifting the vehicle with confidence, reducing rescue times, and minimizing injury risk.

Since November 1, 2013, all new Mercedes-Benz vehicles have come equipped with Rescue Assist℠ QR codes as standard.
